Bhagam Bhaag

Bollywood song lyrics couldn’t get any vaguer. This song, “Bhagam Bhaag”, from the film ‘Bhagam Bhaag’ is so damn confusing that trying to understand it, one actually gets dazed!

What exactly is the song trying to say? It starts with some deep philosophy about life: “Duniya hai gol gol, bhag re bhagam bag”. Then it goes on with some nonsense about running: “Aage aate aate jaate jate, Khoye khoye jaage jaage,Thake thake haare hare, Daure daure sare sare, Pecche pecche aagee aage, Gire pade bhage bhage, bhaaag bhagam bhaaag” (whew!) And after all this, the song suddenly turns into a love song: “Dekhi jo teri yeh ada, Deewane hogaye fida…”. Then, when you’re already thoroughly confused, these two lines come up: “Ja ja ke jayegi kahan, aa aa je ayegi yahan. You know my only desnity, n this will never change”. Whose destiny? “Aayegi yahan” sounds like her destiny, and “my only destiny” sounds like his!

My gawd! What is this song talking about? Running? Coming? Going? Him? Her? Love? Life?

WHAT???

Namak Ishq Ka

Another song from ‘Omkara’ the lyrics of which baffle me like anything. Since the time I first heard this song, I’ve been trying hard to understand its meaning, but they just make no sense to me!

Namak ishq ka” – Is it some new brand of salt (namak) which is being promoted through this song? I’ve heard about Tata salt. I’ve also heard about Captain Cook namak. But namak ishq ka?? Some weird new brand it is. And is this ishq ka namak only available with one’s lover? Why else would the song go like: “Balam se manga, manga re, namak ishq ka…”?

Oh, and how exactly can a girl swallow the moon? The very first line says: “Mein chaand nigal gayi…” And how does the moon figure in this ‘ishq ka namak’ commercial (if that’s what it is)?

Uff….too confusing!

Beedi

Beedi….hmmm…don’t we all just love this song? Sunidhi’s voice….Bipasha’s moves….aaaah…too good it is…too good!

But what the hell does this song mean, man?

Beedi jalai le jigar se piya…” – Just how can someone light a beedi {a cheaper and more (im)potent alternative to cigarette} with one’s jigar (which literally means liver!! Eeeks!!). And “jigar ma badi aag hai”?? I’m flabbergasted! This person should be taken to a hospital immediately! Her/his liver is on fire, goddamnit!

And what does this “sasuri” mean, anyway? If we take the literal translation, it means mother-in-law. So “thandi hawa bhi khilaf, sasur r r r iiii” would mean that the protagonist is complaining to her/his mother-in-law about the cold air! Weird man!

Phew! I just give up. What does this song mean??

Smack That – Eminem and Akon

Now, what does a song like “Smach That” mean? Seriously, I don’t get it. I don’t get its meaning and I don’t get half of its lyrics.

What’s “smack that”? Does it mean anything at all? The first time I heard it, I actually thought it was “smack dad”! And who is this “convict” person? Is the song about strippers (“money no problem, pocket full of that now”)? If it is, then how does the convict figure? And what’s the reference to “putty cat dolls”? Is it making a mockery of the band “Pussy Cat Dolls” by any chance? If yes - why?? And what’s with its wannabe-provocative video? It doesn’t add any meaning to its lyrics at all.

Trashy lyrics at their best, I say.

Akon - Don’t Matter

I tell you man, these angrezi song lyrics are so confusing! They can make your head go round and round and round and round! Take the lyrics of Akon’s new song “Don’t Matter” for instance.

The first few times I heard it, it sounded like a sweet, sad, love song, sung by a guy for his girlfriend. But then it struck me: what is this thing about “fight for our right to love”? Right, huh? Is this song about a gay couple? He even says “puttin' girls before you” which confirms one’s doubts – Yess! This song is about gays!! But then a few seconds later comes this line: “How much of a queen you are to me”…hmmm…

So I again ponder about this question of “fighting for our right to love.” Maybe this song is about racism. Black guy, white girl. BUT, then I see the video. Black guy, black girl…

Now, now…what is this song about?? Anybody?
